Green Data 2.0 - Towards a Circular Economy and Sustainability Reporting with Data Analytics

The Bio and Circular Economy research sector at Savonia University of Applied Sciences has launched the project Towards a Circular Economy and Sustainability Reporting with Data Analytics.

The framework is based on general standards:

  • Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Environmental
  • Social Responsibility and Good Governance (ESG)
  • UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
  • and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)

The project promotes sustainable digital solutions in collaboration with companies in the energy, logistics, and transportation sectors. Additionally, it aims to improve waste stream management and logistics. The implementation will expand and deepen data analytics expertise and its utilization in companies, research, and development within the Bio and Circular Economy ecosystem (BIOCC). The project supports strengthening circular economy processes and materials in companies, as well as research activities with public organizations.

The project collects and analyzes data from companies and public organizations, as well as utilizes open data sources. At the same time, it analyzes information accumulated from research projects and informs companies and residents of North Savo about sustainable development projects and their impacts. The results of research and development work are communicated to stakeholders, potential new partners, and RDI and business ecosystems. New development initiatives and strengthened networks create opportunities to seek funding for North Savo from international funding instruments. This goal is supported by a peer-reviewed publication produced within the project.

The project involves 15 companies and public organizations representing various industries. New companies are welcome to join. The sectors include, among others, real estate and housing, waste management, construction, tourism, IT, transportation, and energy. For companies and other participating organizations, there is an opportunity to take part in, among other things, Hackathon events and co-development workshops, as well as events on AI methods and data analysis tools.

Co-creation creates opportunities for new digital products, services, business models, and processes. The competitiveness of SMEs is strengthened through the development of sustainability reporting in accordance with the subcontracting requirements of large companies. Components include, among others, carbon dioxide emissions (GHG Protocol), climate risk assessments, and local environmental impacts.
